What Are Veneers?

Veneers are thin, custom-made shells crafted from tooth-colored materials designed to cover the front side of your teeth. They are an excellent cosmetic dentistry solution for those looking to improve their smile, especially if you have stained, chipped, or misaligned teeth. Veneers are made from porcelain or resin composite materials, both of which have their own unique benefits. The primary goal of veneers is to change the color, shape, size, or length of your teeth, giving you a smile that you can be proud of. The Veneers Treatment Process

Consultation and Planning

The first step in the veneers treatment process involves a detailed consultation with your dentist, Dr. Sarno at Foothill Modern Dental. During this appointment, your dentist will examine your teeth to ensure that veneers are the right option for you. This will involve a thorough examination of your teeth and gums, as well as a review of your dental history. Your dentist may also take X-rays or make impressions of your mouth and teeth.

Preparation

Once it's determined that veneers are the right solution for you, the next step involves preparing your teeth for the veneers. This process involves removing about 1/2 millimeter of enamel from the tooth surface, which is roughly the same thickness as the veneer that will be added to the tooth surface. After the enamel is removed, your dentist will make a model, or impression, of your tooth. This model is sent out to a dental laboratory, which constructs your veneer. It usually takes 2-4 weeks for the veneers to come back from the laboratory.

Bonding

The final step involves bonding the veneer to your tooth. Before the veneer is permanently cemented to your tooth, your dentist will temporarily place it on your tooth to examine its fit and color. The veneer may be removed and trimmed as needed to achieve the proper fit; the color can be adjusted with the shade of cement to be used. Next, to prepare your tooth to receive the veneer, your tooth will be cleaned, polished, and etched, which roughens the tooth to allow for a strong bonding process.

While veneers themselves don't develop cavities, maintaining oral health involves more than just surface care.

Yes, even if you have those stunning veneers in place, regular professional dental cleanings remain crucial. Preventative dentistry goes beyond polishing your pearly whites; they focus on keeping your gums healthy and ensuring the overall well-being of your oral environment.

Professional cleanings help detect and address any potential issues early on, ensuring your veneers are long-lasting. It's the winning combination of your at-home care and professional touch that ensures your smile stays vibrant, inside and out.
